This Solidarity Day the Univerisity of Colorado Gold Humanism Honor Society would like to say a warm and heartfelt “Thank You” to all of the nurses, residents, medical students, attendings, and other invaluable medical staff for the compassion and dedication they demonstrate on a daily basis.
At Denver Health Hospital, Denver’s safety net hospital for the underserved, compassion and dedication are much appreciated by patients and providers. Here are a few images of some of the many humanistic providers who were recognized on February 14 2013.
University of Colorado School of Medicine Supports Compassionate Patient Care
On February 14, 2013, University of Colorado School of Medicine will join almost 60 medical schools and institutions from across North America in taking a stand for humanism in medicine by observing the third Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS) Solidarity Day for Compassionate Patient Care.
GHHS Solidarity Day for Compassionate Patient Care was initiated after the 2011 shootings in Tucson, AZ to honor the humanistic actions of Randall Friese, MD, the trauma surgeon who first treated shooting victim Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. Dr. Friese said that the most important thing he did for Congresswoman Giffords in the emergency room was to take her hand and tell her that she would be cared for.
To honor that spirit of caring, the Gold Humanism Honor Society of the Arnold P. Gold Foundation created GHHS Solidarity Day for Compassionate Patient Care, when medical schools and healthcare institutions across
North America create and undertake projects demonstrating the importance of empathy and compassion in patient care.
This year, University of Colorado School of Medicine Resident and Fellow Chapter will implement the first annual “Gratitude Visit Day”. We will ask all faculty, residents and students on the campus to personally recognize 1-2 of their interprofessional campus colleagues for their hard work, compassion or humanistic care. At the gratitude visit, the individual will share a heart-felt, detailed compliment describing why they believe this person has demonstrated exceptional hard work, compassion or humanistic care. They may recognize a student, resident, fellow, attending physician, nurse, PA, MA, tech, secretary, or anyone else on campus that they believe has demonstrated these qualities and behaviors and they may do so either in person or via a note. The Gratitude Visit Day is sponsored by the Resident and Fellow Chapter, advised by Drs. Britney Anderson, Jessica Campbell and Rachel Swigris.
Dr. Friese is thankful that his small action will help others understand the importance of treating patients with great empathy. “ Like Dr. Friese, University of Colorado Denver , is making a difference in people’s lives by its contribution to compassionate care on this, and every other day it is practiced, “ stated Jacqueline Mintz, Executive Director of GHHS.
